Kew West International Airport (EYW) has long been the location of extensive construction, with many different renovation projects continually underway. One of the largest and most important leisure travel gateways in South Florida, Key West has long been an important facility for connecting passengers from around the United States to the greater Florida Keys region. However, the airport has long needed renovation and, most importantly, a new terminal building, and that is now officially on the way. Over the past few years, those who have visited Key West International likely remember the facility as being a complete labyrinth of construction. Sometimes, shipping containers were even used as makeshift tunnels, and the airport’s primary waiting area had no seating available, with local news outlet Keys Weekly even referring to it as “purgatory.” Passengers would often have to lug their baggage across the tarmac in the brutal Florida humidity before getting onboard their flights.
However, all of this ended on Monday, April 14, in the early hours of the morning. At roughly 7 AM Eastern Time, Delta Air Lines Flight 1072, a regularly-scheduled service to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), was officially cleared for takeoff, becoming the first flight to use this new terminal. Now, passengers can comfortably wait for their flights from an air-conditioned waiting area. Even while waiting for boarding, passengers can comfortably stand in line on an air-conditioned glass jet bridge, eight of which are available at the new concourse. In celebration, a Delta agent had the following words to share with early morning travelers on that flight:
You lucky people; you are on the very first flight out of the new airport on the first jet bridge out of Key West.
Despite the early hours at which this flight was taking place, passengers were still excited by the opportunity to be among the first to try out the terminal and its new facilities. Even early in the morning, passengers were willing to cheer and share how excited they were about their new experience. Some, however, did note how they missed the nostalgia associated with walking directly outside to aircraft on the ramp.
Not Everything Went Off Entirely Without A Hitch
Opening up a new airport terminal is undoubtedly hard, not only due to the amount of effort that must be put into the construction of a new terminal. Furthermore, the amount of public investment involved in airport renovation and upgrading projects likely leads many to have extremely high expectations regarding the potential success of such a new facility. So many different moving pieces go into the opening of a new terminal that something is bound to initially go wrong.
Therefore, it is unsurprising that the new facility encountered some teething issues on Monday. While flights took off on time, there were some technology issues reported. Some passenger announcement systems were inoperative, some information screens were sideways, and the airport’s Wi-Fi system was also experiencing continual disruptions. Despite the airport’s new architecture, many were still focused on preventing these issues from recurring.
