The Federal Government said yesterday it has no desire to revive the botched Nigeria Air project with Ethiopian Airlines, ET.
This comes amid inquiries about a reference to the revival of the national carrier project by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, during a handover ceremony in Abuja.
Kana had said: “”My deployment to the ministry of aviation and aerospace development is quite timely. While receiving my deployment letter, I received very clear instructions with two tasks to achieve within this period: ensuring the national carrier becomes a reality and sanitizing our airports across the country.”
But clarifying his remarks in a statement yesterday, Kana stated: “Since my inaugural statement on Monday at the hand-over ceremony, I have been inundated with inquiries about my reference to the revival of the national carrier project.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I never said there is a mandate to revive the botched Nigeria Air deal with Ethiopian airline. I received no such instruction.
‘’I was only referring to the general vision of the administration to still consider a national carrier project if it is favourable to the country and under the guidance and directives of Mr President and the minister of aviation. I hope this clarifies all the ambiguities surrounding my earlier statement on this issue.
“On a personal note, I pledge absolute loyalty to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, and remain dedicated to working closely with him to drive the ministry’s agenda forward.
‘’Together, we will ensure that the future of aviation in Nigeria is bright, innovative, and reflective of the aspirations of our great nation.”
The botched Nigeria Air project was a conception of former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika.
The project was suspended by the Federal Government after allegations of corruption. On August 6, 2024, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa also ordered that the Federal Government’s plans to establish a national carrier, Nigeria Air, be halted.

Le gouvernement fédéral a déclaré hier qu’il n’avait aucune envie de relancer le projet bâclé de Nigeria Air avec Ethiopian Airlines, ET.
Cela intervient au milieu d’enquêtes sur une référence à la relance du projet de transporteur national par le secrétaire permanent du ministère fédéral de l’aviation et du développement aérospatial, le Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, lors d’une cérémonie de passation de pouvoir à Abuja.
Kana avait déclaré : « Mon déploiement au ministère de l’aviation et du développement aérospatial arrive à point nommé. En recevant ma lettre de déploiement, j’ai reçu des instructions très claires avec deux tâches à accomplir au cours de cette période : garantir que le transporteur national devienne une réalité et assainir nos aéroports à travers le pays.
Mais clarifiant ses propos dans un communiqué hier, Kana a déclaré : « Depuis ma déclaration inaugurale lundi lors de la cérémonie de passation des pouvoirs, j’ai été inondé de demandes de renseignements sur ma référence à la relance du projet de transport national.
« Pour éviter tout doute, je n’ai jamais dit qu’il existait un mandat pour relancer l’accord bâclé de Nigeria Air avec la compagnie aérienne éthiopienne. Je n’ai reçu aucune instruction de ce type.
«Je faisais seulement référence à la vision générale de l’administration de toujours considérer un projet de transporteur national s’il est favorable au pays et sous la direction et les directives de Monsieur le Président et du ministre de l’aviation. J’espère que cela clarifie toutes les ambiguïtés entourant ma déclaration précédente sur cette question.
« Sur une note personnelle, je promets une loyauté absolue envers le ministre de l’Aviation et du Développement aérospatial, M. Festus Keyamo, et je reste déterminé à travailler en étroite collaboration avec lui pour faire avancer le programme du ministère.
“Ensemble, nous veillerons à ce que l’avenir de l’aviation au Nigeria soit brillant, innovant et reflète les aspirations de notre grande nation.”
Le projet bâclé de Nigeria Air était une conception de l’ancien ministre de l’aviation, Hadi Sirika.
Le projet a été suspendu par le gouvernement fédéral suite à des allégations de corruption. Le 6 août 2024, le juge Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa a également ordonné que le projet du gouvernement fédéral de créer une compagnie aérienne nationale, Nigeria Air, soit interrompu.
