A union in the aviation sector, Joint Consultative and Negotiating Council, JCNC, has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the outstanding payment of defunct Nigeria Airways workers.
Chairman of JCNC, Mr. Hector Nnadi, expressed sadness over the inability of some ex-Nigeria Airways staff to get their full entitlement 30 years after the national carrier was liquidated.
In 2004, former President Olusegun Obasanjo liquidated Nigeria Airways following huge indebtedness.
In 2018, the Federal Government approved the sum of N22.68 billion for the payment of retirement benefits to workers of the liquidated national airline.
The amount approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari was about 50 per cent of the N45.3 billion total entitlement.
In 2023, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, said the federal government was making arrangements to offset the last tranche of the monies owed.
Speaking at the 11th edition of the Aviation Workers’ Week and Award Night, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, Nnadi said it had not been paid.
He said: “I would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of our aviation workers, who strive day and night to ensure the safety, security, and efficiency of our aviation industry. Among these great veterans are the workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways, who gave their patriotic service to this nation but are still struggling to get their full entitlement after 30 years of liquidation.
“We are sending an SOS to Mr President for his further intervention to conclude this over years challenge and become an aviation workers hero. The above is without prejudice to several efforts of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo.”
Meanwhile, Keyamo also reaffirmed his commitment to unionism and the welfare of aviation workers at the event.
The Minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Ibrahim Kana, mni, said unionism should not be antagonistic to progress but a protagonist for it.
On his part, President of the Aviation Round, Air Commodore Ademola Ojuku, Table, in his good will message, commended the JCNC committee for its consistent effort in uniting aviation professionals annually to drive the industry’s progress.

Un syndicat dans le secteur de l’aviation, conjoint consultatif et au conseil de négociation, JCNC, a exhorté le président Bola Tinubu à intervenir dans le paiement en suspens des travailleurs du Nigeria Airways.
Le président de JCNC, M. Hector Nnadi, a exprimé sa tristesse quant à l’incapacité de certains anciens membres du personnel d’Airways au Nigéria pour obtenir son droit total 30 ans après la liquidation du transporteur national.
En 2004, l’ancien président Olusegun Obasanjo a liquidé le Nigeria Airways à la suite d’une énorme dette.
En 2018, le gouvernement fédéral a approuvé la somme de 22,68 milliards de nairas pour le paiement des prestations de retraite aux travailleurs de la compagnie aérienne nationale liquidée.
Le montant approuvé par l’ancien président Muhammadu Buhari était d’environ 50% du droit total de 45,3 milliards de nairas.
En 2023, le ministre de l’Aviation et du Développement aérospatial, M. Festus Keyamo, a déclaré que le gouvernement fédéral prenait des dispositions pour compenser la dernière tranche des sommes dues.
S’exprimant lors de la 11e édition de la soirée des travailleurs de l’aviation et de la soirée des prix, qui s’est tenue au Shehu Musa Yar’adua Center, Abuja, Nnadi a déclaré qu’il n’avait pas été payé.
Il a déclaré: «Je voudrais reconnaître les efforts inlassables de nos travailleurs de l’aviation, qui s’efforcent de jour et de nuit pour assurer la sécurité, la sécurité et l’efficacité de notre industrie de l’aviation. Parmi ces grands anciens combattants figurent les travailleurs du défunt Nigeria Airways, qui ont rendu leur service patriotique à cette nation mais ont toujours du mal à obtenir leur droit après 30 ans de liquidation.
«Nous envoyons un SOS à M. président pour sa nouvelle intervention pour conclure ce défi au fil des ans et devenir un héros des travailleurs de l’aviation. Ce qui précède est sans préjudice à plusieurs efforts du ministre de l’Aviation et du Développement aérospatial, M. Festus Keyamo. »
Pendant ce temps, Keyamo a également réaffirmé son engagement envers le syndicalisme et le bien-être des travailleurs de l’aviation lors de l’événement.
Le ministre, représenté par le secrétaire permanent du ministère, le Dr Ibrahim Kana, MNI, a déclaré que le syndicalisme ne devrait pas être antagoniste pour progresser mais un protagoniste pour cela.
De son côté, président de la Round de l’aviation, le commodore d’Air Ademola Ojuku, Table, dans son message Good Will, a félicité le Comité JCNC pour son effort constant pour unir des professionnels de l’aviation chaque année pour stimuler les progrès de l’industrie.
